The
Comprehensive Breast Center is led by Alison
Estabrook, MD, who has been the Chief of Breast Surgery at
St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center since 1998. Dr. Estabrook
came to St. Luke's-Roosevelt from Columbia Presbyterian Medical
Center, where she was the Chief of Breast Surgery for eight years.
She performs approximately 100 lumpectomies and 60 mastectomies
per year. Before 1998, these surgeries were often accompanied
by a full axillary node dissection, but over the last 5 years,
a new technique called sentinel node biopsy has been developed.
Sentinel node biopsy allows most women to have only one or two
lymph nodes removed, rather than the 10-15 which had been removed
in the past. Dr. Estabrook has performed approximately 500 sentinel
node biopsies over the past five years.
