The Partial Hospitalization Unit
at The Long Island College Hospital

The Partial Hospitalization Unit at Long Island College Hospital offers short-term, medically supervised treatment services geared towards alleviating the stressors and symptoms associated with acute psychiatric crises that might otherwise result in, or prolong hospitalization. In consultation with clients and their families, highly individualized treatment plans are developed and implemented by an interdisciplinary team of nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, creative arts and occupational therapists, and psychologists. Therapeutic services are provided in individual and small group modalities that allow for close attention to be paid to the unique needs of clients. The primary goal of the Partial Hospitalization Unit is to stabilize and restore the client's functioning within the community.

The program operates from 9AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday, with each client's participation tailored to his/her needs and abilities. The wide array of services offered include: individual and group counseling, psychiatric assessment and stabilization, case management and social work services, psycho-educational and relapse prevention training, medication monitoring, symptom management, and vocational counseling. The program also offers specialized services for clients with substance abuse problems.

One of the reasons people choose the Partial Hospitalization Unit is often because it is an outpatient alternative to a more costly and restrictive inpatient stay. In other instances, hospitalized clients may be discharged sooner than expected. The Partial Hospitalization Unit is fully equipped to service clients who are still recovering from acute crisis situations. The program combines the strongest elements of both inpatient and outpatient care. Clients receive the intensity and close supervision associated with hospital care while remaining in the community among family and friends.

The Partial Hospitalizationl Unit at LICH is fully certified by the NYS Office of Mental Health and is situated in a newly renovated and modernized wing within the hospital. The program has the advantage of being an integral part of the larger Department of Psychiatry with close links to acute psychiatric units, 24-hour psychiatric emergency services, outpatient mental health services, and substance abuse clinics. Because the Partial Hospitalization Unit is located within a state-of-the-art medical center, access to the full range of primary and tertiary medical care services are also readily available. This full array of services under one roof, closely coordinated by our case management staff, ensures continuity and comprehensiveness of care for our clients. We are conveniently located in the Brooklyn Heights are of Brooklyn with easy access to public transportation. Ambulette services may be arranged for travel to and from the program as needed.
