Introducing a Specialized
Center of Care

The Skin of Color Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center addresses the unique needs of
patients with pigmented skin, hair and nails. The
focus of the center is to diagnose and treat skin problems of African-American, Hispanic, Indian and Asian patients. A full staff of clinicians, devoted to dermatology problems of skin of color, provides unparalleled treatments, cosmetic interventions and diagnoses.

Expertise in Diagnosis and Treatment

There are numerous skin problems which either disproportionately affect people of color or require special evaluation techniques and treatments. Some of the problems commonly treated at the center include: Acne blemishes-dark marks caused by acne pimples and cysts; Keloids-massive scar formations from injury or surgery; Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra-flesh moles involving the face and neck; Pseudofolliculitis barbae-razor bumps that plague many African-American women and men; Vitiligo-loss of skin pigmentation resulting in white patches; Xerosis-extremely itchy, dry skin which has an ashen appearance; Dyschromias-discolorations producing uneven skin tones; Eczema-a lifelong skin problem that produces rashes; Alopecia-hair loss resulting from chemical relaxers, traction from hair weaves and braids, thyroid disease, and hereditary factors; Seborrheic dermatitis-dry, flaky, itchy scalp; Onychodystrophy-abnormalities of the nails by fungus or other skin disorders.

Enhancing Physical Appearance

The center will advise patients on the effective use of skin and hair care products and cosmetics. Since the myriad of choices available for personal care products can be confusing, the center will determine the best products for each patient's skin. Additionally, our skilled dermatologists can improve appearance through a variety of cosmetic procedures including: Chemical peels to even skin tone, smooth and soften rough skin, as well as to improve acne; Laser treatments to reduce hair growth and remove veins on the legs and face; Sclerotherapy to remove spider veins from the legs; Dermabrasion to remove scars; Hair transplants to restore patches of hair loss.

Understanding Skin of Color

The Skin of Color Center will serve as a rich base for scientific endeavors designed to further understand diseases which affect skin of color. It will develop new ethical drug and cosmetic treatments for skin of color. The center will also conduct research studies on genetics, photobiology, immunology, and keratinocyte and melanocyte biology.
