Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Division provides regionally recognized expertise in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery including:

  • Complex reconstruction following breast cancer surgery, including Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flaps, in which skin and fat is removed from the abdomen and transplanted to the mastectomy site. The tissue from the abdomen is detached, along with its small blood vessels, and then reconnected in the area of the new breast using highly specialized microsurgical techniques to restore circulation to the tissue. This is done without taking muscle from the abdomen (as was done in the older TRAM flap technique), resulting in less pain, quicker recuperation and improved abdominal strength. Mount Sinai Beth Israel is one of the few sites in the tri-state area offering this muscle-sparing approach.

Watch Dr. Smith and Dr. Samson perform diep flap breast reconstruction surgery.

  • Complex reconstruction following head and neck surgery (for instance, from cancer of the mouth or jaw), including microsurgical and craniomaxillofacial techniques
  • Reconstruction following trauma
  • Reconstruction of congenital abnormalities in children, including cleft palate, vascular malformations and cranial abnormalities
  • Cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, including cosmetic breast surgery, facial cosmetic surgery and body contouring

Multidisciplinary Approach
The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Division works in concert with a multidisciplinary team of specialists from Breast Cancer Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Oral Surgery, Neurosurgery, Interventional Radiology and the Vascular Birthmark Institute to provide comprehensive care to patients with the most complex reconstructive issues.

The division also offers patients a coordinated, management approach with a team of specially trained nurses, physician assistants and patient care coordinators.
