Alan and Barbara Mirken Department of Neurology Centers of Excellence Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia Center of Excellence at Beth Israel ALS Association-Certified Center at Beth Israel National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) Center of Excellence at Beth Israel Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia Center of Excellence at Beth Israel Obtaining a proper diagnosis and finding access to treatment and care has long been missing for people with dystonia. This multidisciplinary center at Beth Israel is the first of its kind for dystonia. It brings together neurologists, surgeons, psychiatrists, genetic counselors and others as needed, to confer about a patient’s diagnosis and to develop a comprehensive, coordinated treatment plan. It also features a training program to enable fellows (physicians pursuing advanced, specialized training), to acquire clinical and research skills in the field of dystonia. This process helps to develop the next generation of experts.

Comprehensive assessments, diagnostic and follow-up testing, education and treatment are individualized for each patient. The ALS Center at Beth Israel is under the leadership of Stephen N. Scelsa, MD and Daniel MacGowan, MD. Drs. Scelsa and MacGowen are codirectors of the neuromuscular division at Beth Israel. Dr. Scelsa is an associate professor of clinical neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. MacGowan is an assistant professor of neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
