Quality Improvement At Mount Sinai Beth Israel

National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) surveillance results for Total Knee Replacement Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in 2013:
Surgical Site Infection (SSI) rate of 0.2% (1 infection in 415 total knee surgeries)

NHSN surveillance results for Total Hip Replacement Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in 2013:
SSI rate of 0.2% (1 infection in 455 total hip surgeries)

The Standardized Infection Ratio (SIR) is the new term utilized by Medicare and the Joint Commission to monitor surgical site infection. SIR measures institutional infection rates compared to national standards. The ratio is defined as the hospital infection rate divided by the risk adjusted national infection rate as determined by the NHSN. An SIR <1.0 indcates that the hospital infection rate is better than the national standard.

The outstanding results at Beth Israel speak for themselves. Our SIR of 0.2 is well below the national standard. Through hard work over the past several years, we have improved our compliance with Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) standards to nearly 100% (99.8%). The entire medical, surgical, and nursing staff at Beth Israel is dedicated to maintaining the highest quality of care and best surgical outcomes.
