Innovative therapies that cure cancer and improve quality of life
More than 38,000 Americans are diagnosed with head and neck cancer every year. With early detection and expert care, most of these cancers can be cured-and many patients with advanced disease live rich, full lives thanks to surgical and medical breakthroughs innovated by our specialists. Our physicians are the pioneers of:

  • Conservation head and neck tumor treatment that delivers cure rates as high as traditional procedures which frequently leave people permanently debilitated and deformed. Our radiation oncologists are some of the nation's foremost experts in brachytherapy-a treatment that implants tiny radiation seeds at the cancer site, only, with minimal exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Our novel combination therapies may reduce or eliminate the need for surgery in some of the most advanced cancers.
  • Sensate free flap surgery, a revolutionary procedure that restores form, function and sensation after cancer surgery of the face and jaw. Sensate free flap surgery was pioneered in 1989 by one of our microvascular and head and neck surgeons who has performed more than 1,500 "free flaps" and who directs our head and neck reconstructive program.
  • Streamlined oral and maxillofacial surgery that combines cancer treatment, reconstruction and permanent implants-for dental replacement or prostheticplacement-in a coordinated manner to provide for early rehabilitation.

A range of support services
Head and neck cancer requires a full commitment from your treatment team-that includes you, your family and loved ones, as well as your primary family physician. At The Institute we provide the support services that make this possible with pre-treatment nutritional counseling, psychotherapy, integrative medicine practices, speech and swallowing therapy, patient advocacy, a head and neck cancer survivors' support group and much more.
