Women’s Heart NY
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States with approximately half a million women dying each year from some form of heart disease or stroke. In 2006, one of 30 women died of breast cancer, while almost one of seven women died of cardiovascular disease. Despite these alarming statistics, women and their physicians are often not aware of the seriousness of heart disease in women. Research has shown that less than 50% of women are aware of their higher risk for heart disease as compared to breast cancer. Furthermore, women may have different symptoms than men and may respond differently to treatments or testing. Women’s Heart NY is a multi-site comprehensive heart program designed specifically for women who are at risk for, or have a history of heart disease. Diagnostic tests and treatments are available for a wide spectrum of heart diseases, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias and congestive heart failure. Our multidisciplinary team includes cardiologists, nutritionists, smoking cessation counselors and exercise physiologists. To provide an individualized approach to care, all aspects of a patient’s profile are considered, including their health history, family history and lifestyle. Many support services are available to help patients achieve lifestyle modifications that can reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. If you are a woman over the age of 18 and have a cardiovascular-related illness, symptoms that you think may indicate heart disease, or if you smoke, are obese, have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of heart disease, you will benefit from the unique counseling and care that is offered at Women’s Heart NY.
