Ambulatory Care:
The 3 year fellowship program provides Continuity Clinic for each fellow at either the St. Luke’s or Roosevelt site, inclusive of:
- Chest
- Asthma
- Smoking Cessation
- Pulmonary Hypertension
- Sleep Disorders
James P. Mara Center for Lung Disease:
A $2,000,000 donation was given to SLRHC to establish a lung center of excellence at SLRHC. This center opened during December 1998. This center has greatly strengthened the educational and research mission of the pulmonary-critical care division. James P Mara Center continues to be funded. The mission of the Mara Lung Center is to develop programs that optimize patient care, education, teaching, and research and to enhance the lives of patients disabled by all varieties of lung disorders. The center provides support for several programs that enhance the training experience and provide research opportunities to fellows:
- Community outreach - early detection of lung disease, asthma screenings, Great American Smoke out, Asthma Day, COPD Day, etc.
- Patient run support groups (COPD and alpha - 1). Fellows participate in lectures to the patients
- Pulmonary rehabilitation - fellows refer, assess and evaluate progress of their patients, and participate in cardiopulmonary exercise testing
** Of note, the James P. Mara Center for Lung Disease is one of only two certified pulmonary rehabilitation centers in NYC
- Grants - early detection of lung disease, smoking cessation, special enter for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
- Local and national involvement in advocacy programs (NECA, US COPD Coalition)
- Involvement/presentation in conferences (COPD/Alpha – 1 antitrypsin deficiency)
- IRB submission, recruitment and follow-up of research subjects
