Coronary thrombectomy is a minimally invasive, catheter based procedure that is performed to remove a blood clot, called a thrombus, from a coronary artery or other blood vessel. A blood clot can be very dangerous, as it is the primary cause of strokes.

During coronary thrombectomy, a catheter, inserted into an artery in the groin, is guided to the heart while the interventional cardiologist watches its advancement on a monitor. Dye is injected into the coronary arteries or heart to locate the thrombus, and after it is located, a new catheter with a vacuum function is guided to the site to remove the clot.

Most patients are generally discharged the same day.
