Electrophysiology (EPS) studies track the heart’s electrical activity and electrical pathways, determining any heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias), as well as the best treatments for them.

During an EPS study, our heart rhythm experts, called electrophysiologists, use specially insulated catheters, inserted through a vein in the groin area and guided by X-ray, to advance electrodes into the heart. The electrodes assess electrical activity and map arrhythmias or irregular heartbeats, offering important information on their prognosis, as well as any other serious cardiac symptoms. Electrophysiologists also use EPS to administer different medications to the heart to see which one controls a rhythm disturbance, or to determine what cardiac procedure or device might best treat the problem.
