Critical Care Medicine

The critical care units at St Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals are supervised by members of the pulmonary critical care division 24 hours, seven days a week, to provide the best care and treatment for the critically ill. Directors of the units, Drs. Hassan Khouli (Roosevelt) and Janet Shapiro (St. Luke's) ensure the highest quality of care.

The pulmonary/critical care division is devoted to saving lives through initiatives such as reducing ventilator associated pneumonia, controlling blood sugar during severe illness, and using the latest technology for bedside management of pulmonary, cardiac and neurological disease.

The division has strong ethical interest in providing multicultural care for patients. Both directors are active in the Ethics committee, and in developing palliative care programs for patients wishing comfort during their terminal illness.

One of our special features is our simulation laboratory, which is an extremely valuable tool for training our medical staff in a realistic, risk-free environment. Located at Roosevelt Hospital, this state-of-the-art lab has sophisticated computerized manikins, audiovisual support, and several other instruments, including a bronchoscopy simulator. The simulation lab provides realistic training in different clinical areas, such as cardiac arrest, airway management and emergency procedures.
