James P. Mara Center for Lung Disease

The James P. Mara Center for Lung Disease was established through the generous support of Judith Mara Carson and her husband, Russell L., in loving memory of her brother, James P. Mara, who died of pulmonary emphysema at the age of 40.

Their vision - to increase community awareness, improve patient education and advance treatment of lung disease through basic science and clinical research - was realized on December 1st, 1998, when the James P. Mara Center for Lung Disease opened its doors to the New York City community.

Our mission is to serve individuals with asthma and chronic lung diseases associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. COPD is a classification of conditions affecting the airways of the lungs. Such conditions include chronic asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

In the face of adversity he had wide shoulders to bear the burdens.
An unconquerable spirit to buoy others.
Outstretched hands for those in need.
Loving arms to shield our pain and a strong heart to face his fate with grace and courage.
