Aortic Aneurysm Repair

An aortic aneurysm is a widening or bulging of the aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Aortic aneurysms can present with pain as a warning, but many times have no symptoms. Often, aortic aneurysms are detected by ultrasound or a CT scan during a screening or during a test for another medical condition. Aortic aneurysms are most common over age 60, and men are five times more likely than women to get an aortic aneurysm.

Aortic aneurysms vary in size and can grow slowly or very quickly. An aortic aneurysm greater than 5.5cm or one that is growing rapidly is at a higher risk for rupture. Surgery for repair of these types of aortic aneurysms is recommended. Rupture of an aortic aneurysm is a catastrophic event, often resulting in death, so early detection of an aortic aneurysm is very important.

The heart surgeons at Beth Israel Medical Center have extensive experience repairing aortic aneurysms, with consistently successful outcomes. With its seasoned team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and nursing staff, Beth Israel provides all the crucial elements for safely caring for patients with aortic aneurysms.

Our 64-slice multi-detector CT scanner capability provides excellent diagnostic support for the evaluation of these patients, providing the surgeon images of unprecedented detail and clarity.
