Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization
Beth Israel Medical Center is one of only a very few hospitals in the New York City area offering transmyocardial laser revascularization, showing our dedication to staying at the forefront of state-of-the-art care for our patients. Transmyocardial laser revascularization at Beth Israel is performed as a complement to bypass surgery in patients that have diseased areas of the heart that cannot be bypassed When performing transmyocardial laser revascularization with a low-powered Holmium:YAG laser, a qualified Beth Israel cardiac surgeon delivers precise laser energy directly to the target area(s) of the heart muscle that is lacking proper blood flow and oxygen, creating small channels into the heart chamber.
The channels in the heart muscle seal over immediately with little blood loss, and allow fresh oxygenated blood to perfuse the heart wall immediately. According to research and clinical studies, these channels promote the growth of microvascularization, or angiogenesis, over time, which, in turn, may provide damaged heart tissue with a better supply of blood and oxygen. Angina symptoms, including chest pain, usually subside over time in the majority of patients treated with TMR. Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization Benefits:
The follow-up requirements for recovery after a TMR procedure are similar to those following other heart surgeries, including regular check-ups by your physician. Your physician will advise you when you may expect to return to more normal activities.
How to determine if transmyocardial laser revascularization is an option for you If you have severe angina and think you may be a candidate for transmyocardial laser revascularization, and would like a consultation with a Beth Israel cardiac surgeon, please call (212) 420-2584 |
