Cystic Fibrosis

The Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Center at Mount Sinai Beth Israel is fully accredited as a Cystic Fibrosis Specialty Center by the U.S. Department of Health. As one of the distinguished centers in the United States that meets the standards for accreditation set by The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), the CF Center adheres to the CFF’s guidelines for cystic fibrosis care. Our expertly trained and experienced staff has cared for hundreds of CF patients who come from all over the world. Patients and their families rely on our accurate diagnostic capabilities, state-of-the-art treatment approach, and the comprehensive supportive services we provide.

The multidisciplinary team of health professionals of the Mount Sinai Health System —that includes pulmonologists, pediatricians, social workers, gastroenterologists, nutritionists, physical therapists, genetic counselors, and exercise and complementary therapy experts—closely monitor our cystic fibrosis patients. We pride ourselves on providing excellent patient care and personal attention, which is why all of these services are available on-site at our Center and provided in our newly renovated facility.

In addition to comprehensive medical care, our CF Center participates in community outreach and education programs. As a member of CF Foundation Therapeutics’ prestigious Therapeutics Development Network, we are conducting cutting-edge research and clinical trials for investigation of new drugs and therapies.

Cystic Fibrosis and the Family

Cystic fibrosis is a condition that impacts not only the person with the diagnosis, but the whole family. Our dedicated CF Social Worker supports and advocates for people with cystic fibrosis and their families as they face the challenges of living life with CF and navigating the healthcare system. In addition, we can arrange psychosocial supportive services for patients and families on an individual basis.

Genetic counseling is available to all family members to answer questions about how CF is inherited and to discuss what testing may be available to them. As decisions regarding genetic testing are highly individual, our genetic counselor provides information and support while keeping the patient or family member’s beliefs and values in mind. The counselor also manages the newborn screening testing and communicates all results to the Department of Health and to referring physicians.

Mount Sinai Health System provides a broad range of CF literature and teaching opportunities to our patients on their routine visits to the CF Center.
