History and Program Description
To address the growing problem of type 2 diabetes the Division of Endocrinology at Mount Sinai Beth Israel inaugurated the Gerald J. Friedman Diabetes Institute the Fall of 2007.  The mission of the Gerald J. Friedman Diabetes Institute at Mount Sinai Beth Israel is to provide the highest quality comprehensive diabetes care; to raise public awareness of the needs of people with diabetes; to conduct research in diabetes; and to provide education for people with diabetes and their families, as well as for the general public and medical professionals

The Institute takes and active role in providing the most innovative diabetes education and treatment programs. Composed of nurse practitioners, registered nurses, registered dieticians, a case manager and an exercise physiologist, the institute staff develops individualized treatment plans for patients.  One-on-one and group support sessions are offered and outreach programs are conducted throughout New York City.  The goal of these activities is to achieve optimal management of the disease and to prevent serious health complications from diabetes.

Mount Sinai Beth Israel serves as the Manhattan Campus for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The Division of Endocrinology is thus linked to the academic and research resources of this leading medical school. Our own fully equipped endocrine research laboratory has multiple, ongoing research projects. Visiting researchers and experts in the field lecture regularly in our division. Our faculty, in turn, contributes to developments in endocrinology through scientific papers, textbooks and presentations at national and international meetings.
