Peripheral nerves are all the nerves that are located outside the brain and spinal cord. Their job is to transmit messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Because peripheral nerves are located everywhere in the body, peripheral nerve conditions are also found in many areas of the body.

Pain and impaired function can result from a damaged peripheral nerve. Some peripheral nerve conditions require medication and physical and occupational therapies; others require surgery. Many conditions benefit from a combination of several approaches.

The Peripheral Nerve Center at Mount Sinai Beth Israel is a comprehensive center. An expert surgical team works in a multidisciplinary fashion with other medical specialists, such as radiologists and rehabilitation experts, to accurately diagnose the problem and create the best treatment approach.
