Head and Neck Surgery

The Head and Neck Surgery Division provides expertise in all aspects of upper pulmonary and upper digestive tract surgery, including those for:

  • Abnormalities and conditions of the thyroid and parathyroid
  • Malignancies of the head and neck such as in the mouth, tongue, larynx, pharynx, salivary glands, and the upper third of the trachea and esophagus
  • Endoscopic procedures of the larynx and vocal cords for diagnostic purposes

Multidisciplinary Approach
Because of the anatomical nature of the head and neck region and the collegial, multidisciplinary atmosphere at Beth Israel Medical Center, the Head and Neck Surgery Division routinely integrates its treatment of patients and works closely with other services. For instance, since most head and neck surgery has aesthetic impacts on the body, the division’s surgeons plan carefully in conjunction with and often operate in coordination with plastic and reconstructive surgeons.

Thyroid conditions, too, are typically treated collaboratively with endocrinologists. In caring for cancer patients, head and neck surgeons also work closely with medical and radiation oncologists, imaging specialists, and the support team of the Continuum Cancer Centers of New York (nursing, social workers, mental health specialists, among others). A coordinated, multidisciplinary management approach allows every patient to achieve the best possible outcome.
