Surgical Oncology

The Surgical Oncology Division provides surgical diagnostic and treatment approaches to solid tumors throughout the body. Surgical Oncology is part of the Continuum Cancer Centers of New York. Conditions that are treated include: Many surgical oncology procedures, such as biopsies, are diagnostic in nature. Often, both the diagnostic evaluation of the tumor and the actual surgical treatment is conducted at the same time. We also focus on palliative operations to alleviate symptoms relating to cancer and improve quality of life.

Minimally Invasive Procedures
Along with traditional, open operations, the section’s surgeons perform many therapeutic and diagnostic procedures using minimally invasive techniques. Minimally invasive surgery provides patients with the advantages of less pain, shorter recovery time and faster return to normal activities.

Multidisciplinary Approach and Interdisciplinary Support
Because of the nature of cancer and the collegial environment of Beth Israel Medical Center, the Surgical Oncology Division works closely with medical and radiation oncologists, imaging specialists, pathologists, and the support team of the Continuum Cancer Centers of New York. (nursing, social workers, mental health specialists, among others). A coordinated, multidisciplinary disease management approach allows every patient to achieve the best possible outcome.

This spirit of collaboration also facilitates highly specialized procedures. For instance, the division’s surgeons have the ability to perform intra-operative radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is added during surgery to deliver radiation directly to the tumor or the bed of the tumor while minimizing damage to non-diseases surrounding tissue.

Collaboration is also in play diagnostically, such as during sentinel lymph node mapping. Using expertise in surgery, nuclear medicine and general imaging, a lymph node that is at high risk of metastatic disease can be identified. Sentinel lymph node mapping is especially useful in treating breast, colon cancers and melanoma.

The division actively participates in multiple clinical trials that allow for a host of new and innovative treatments to be offered at Beth Israel Medical Center.
