Continuum Cancer Centers of New York's Comprehensive Breast Programs at Beth Israel Medical Center and St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals Strongly Opposes the U.S. Preventive Services Task Forces (USPSTF) Recommendations Released November 16th 2009
The special feature
of our breast cancer program is the total, real-time integration
of an interdisciplinary approach. Surgical, radiation, and medical
oncologists represent the three main treatment approaches, with
support from advanced practice oncologist nurses, Cancer Supportive
Services, and other healthcare providers. Oncology treatment is
tailored to each patient’s disease and personal situation.
We base our interdisciplinary approach on:
Eliminating all visible tumor- Oncologists will
recommend surgery to remove the primary tumor.
Reducing the risk of the disease recurring, and
killing off any cancer cells that may remain. Radiation, chemotherapy,
or hormonal therapy are among the treatment options that are pursued.
If the cancer recurs, the patient may choose further surgery, depending
on where the cancer is found, or a variety of treatments to fight
distant metastases.
