Watchful Waiting

Watchful Waiting

For carefully selected men, watchful waiting is the best possible form of treatment. Watchful waiting is actually an active surveillance of the already diagnosed prostate cancer. It is ideal for patients who, because of their age or health problems other than the cancer, might be better served by avoiding surgery or radiation. It can also be used for patients who simply prefer the risk of the disease progressing over the risks of surgery and radiation. For many, it is a quality of life issue.

For the watchful waiting method, the physician will carefully monitor the progression of the prostate cancer through tests such as the PSA, DRE, and transrectal ultrasound. Although there is the risk that the cancer will progress, there are no side effects to watchful waiting and it avoids all the social and economic aspects of treatment.
