Doctor's Advice: Traveling Is Therapeutic Isn’t it exciting to plan a vacation? You start dreaming about it, and know it will soon come true! From the minute you book a trip or buy that plane ticket, it’s as if you‘re already on that vacation. You are immediately transported and thrilled about your upcoming escape. Whether you are working hard or whether you’re ill, dreaming of your next trip keeps your spirits high. I frequently hear my patients say: “We had a vacation planned before I was diagnosed. We want to cancel it. Can you write me a letter to get reimbursed?” I love answering: “Of course I can, but maybe you don’t need to cancel your vacation….why don’t you tell me when you are travelling and I can plan the treatment around your trip.” While some patients react with disbelief, they eventually think: “Maybe I could….” Their eyes shine and they feel energized by the possibility of a beautiful getaway. This thought gives them hope—hope that cancer cannot change who they are, nor destroy their spirit, their dreams or their capacity to enjoy themselves. Over my many years of practice, I have especially enjoyed stories of my patients’ trips, seen their vacations’ pictures, and more than anything, witnessed their smiling faces as they felt revitalized and happy.
Never stop dreaming, never stop planning for wonders!
Thanks to “Laura’s Journeys,” many patients will follow the path of living the dreams that Bill and Laura Parness have mastered.
I am thrilled to help launch this amazing project. Gabriel A. Sara, M.D |
