The Center staff uses a special programming technique to maximize auditory functioning. We assess the speech perception errors that each patient makes during each programming session and modify the map, with the goal that every phoneme will be heard. We believe this offers the best possibility of optimal hearing with a cochlear implant.

Patients are seen by the audiologist about four weeks after surgery to turn on or activate the implant. The initial visit lasts two to three hours. A second visit will be scheduled within a week. Additional programming (mapping) sessions take place after two weeks and then again in four weeks. Further appointments are scheduled as needed. All patients are seen every three months for the first two years and every three to six months thereafter. Under some circumstances, children have the option of having their implant programmed at school.
