Short-Term Rehab Unit
Patients in our 25-bed, short-term rehab unit have daily access to the program's intensive physical and occupational therapies, and speech-language pathology and neuropsychologist services. All patients are well cared for by an excellent around-the-clock rehab nursing and medical staff. Two upgraded private rooms are available on this unit.

The typical length of stay is two to three weeks. Patients include those being treated for stroke, traumatic brain injuries, orthopedic conditions, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, amputations, and other general medical or surgical diagnoses.

In addition to the physiatrist (a doctor who specializes in rehabilitation medicine), rehab nurses, social worker, a neuropsychologist and home care nurse, the inpatient rehab team includes:

  • Occupational and physical therapists, who evaluate and treat deficits in function. These may include, but are not limited to, deficits in gait, balance, transferring, activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing and self-care, and strength and endurance. All patients are provided the opportunity to maximize their functional level prior to discharge, enabling them to return to as close to a prior level of function as possible. Treatment interventions may include, but are not limited to, therapeutic exercise, gross and fine motor activities, sensory activities, gait, functional mobility, activities of daily living training, prosthetic/orthotic training, and wheelchair or other equipment assessment and training.
  • Speech language pathologists, who evaluate and treat people with communication and swallowing disorders and cognitive disorders, including aphasia, dysphagia, dysarthria, as well as voice disorders. They also provide augmentative communication devices and program these devices to meet the needs of patients. Modified barium swallow studies are performed with radiologists to treat swallowing disorders.
  • Audiologists, who diagnose (using state-of-the-art equipment), provide non-medical treatment, and manage individuals with hearing loss or balance problems. They evaluate and treat patients of all ages and perform complete hearing evaluations, vestibular testing evaluations, audiology evaluations, hearing screenings and cochleography studies. Additionally, they test every infant born in the hospital through the New York State-mandated hearing screening.
The rehab team meets regularly for interdisciplinary team and patient/family education conferences. This interdisciplinary approach ensures continuity of care and patient and family education from admission through follow-up after discharge.

Treatments often take place in our special Independence Square, a series of interactive modules that gives patients opportunities to practice moving through everyday physical situations (shopping, taking a bus and getting into a taxi). Treatments also take place in our well equipped rehabilitation gyms, training kitchen and bathroom, or at bedside.

One special feature of the rehab unit is a designated dining room. All patients are encouraged to walk to the dining room (if possible) and take their meals in this pleasant setting, complete with a piano.

We also offer patients the famous Beauty Day, in which local hair stylists and makeup artists volunteer their talents to offer patients a makeover.

In-Patient Rehab Consult Service
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation also offers a consult service to the hospital's general population of acute-care patients who are experiencing decreased mobility and/or decreased ability to keep up with their activities of daily living following surgery or traumatic events.

Designated Stroke Center
As a Designated Stroke Center, Roosevelt Hospital has a strong and comprehensive rehabilitation program. Stroke patients are ensured access to our rehabilitative expertise throughout the entire range of care from emergency department and inpatient stay through outpatient follow-up.
