The Pulmonary Critical Care Training Program mission statement consists of four primary goals. The program directors and participants will work effectively to accomplish these aims with an overriding principle - that the trainees should not provide service without a clearly defined educational benefit. The four primary goals are:
- To graduate pulmonary critical care specialists who demonstrate professionalism and high ethical principles and have mastered the skills of managing a variety of acute and chronic problems at every stage of illness from diagnosis to treatment to palliative/end of life care and long term care. These specialists will work to prevent chronic lung disease and promote a lifestyle in their patients to enhance pulmonary health.
- To provide the necessary procedural skills needed for a pulmonary critical care specialist. These skills include understanding the appropriate indications, cost effectiveness and diagnostic precision of the procedure, obtaining informed consent based on sound knowledge and knowing how to manage common and uncommon complications.
- To equip graduates with the skills needed to navigate the medical marketplace. They will have the opportunity to learn leadership skills in managing and directing an intensive care unit, a private practice and a pulmonary function laboratory. These will include managed care and community based practice skills, quality improvement skills, medical literature critical appraisal skills, and a variety of communication skills necessary to function in a team environment. We will give trainees the opportunity to develop into clinicians and clinician educators.
- To provide the skills necessary for graduates as pulmonary intensivists to manage patients with pulmonary disease and critical illness with an approach soundly based on scientific principles. These skills include an understanding of the basic mechanisms of pathogenesis, an ability to critically appraise the medical literature, to base their practice on evidence based recommendations, to gain experience in developing research protocols, to participate in research programs and to develop the skills necessary to write a research paper.
