Research

Published the first report on the use of distraction osteogenesis to re-grow bone in a segmental mandible defect in an animal model (canine).

Published the first report on the use of distraction osteogenesis to re-grow bone within a segmental mandible defect in a human.


1996
Co-developer of the first calcium phosphate cement (BoneSourceTM , Stryker-Leibinger, Inc., (Kalamazoo, Michigan) cleared for human use by the Food and Drug Administration. This cement can be sculpted intraoperatively and sets in vivo to a hard implant composed of hydroxyapatite, bonds to the bone and slowly supports the ingrowth of new bone into the implant. The cement is now sold internationally for craniofacial reconstruction. It is currently in clinical trials for various orthopedic applications.

Published the first long-term clinical and histologic results using acellular dermis (AlloDerm, LifeCell Corporation, Houston, Texas), for reconstructive facial soft tissue augmentation.1998
Published the first report on the use of acellular dermis for the repair of dural defects in an animal model.

1998
Performed the first use of acellular dermis for the repair of dural defects in humans. This material is one of the more commonly applied biomaterials for dural defect repair in the United States.
